We all know that hydration is super important. It helps our bodies work efficiently, keeps our skin from drying out, and in general just makes us feel good! Even when we’re getting our 8 glasses a day, winter can be so hard on the skin; especially our lips. Drier air and indoor heating can strip our skin of much-needed moisture. Sometimes our lips need a little help, and that’s where lip balm comes in!
Chapped lips are no fun; they can feel tight, tingly, and sometimes even flaky. With so many lip balms on the market how do you choose? We’ve done some investigating, and here are a few suggestions for when your hydration routine isn’t quite cutting it.
Best-rated overall: Burt’s Bees, under $10 for a 4-pack. With ingredients like vitamin E and peppermint, this balm is a long-loved favorite. It glides on smoothly, moisturizes well, and isn’t sticky. Burt’s Bees also offers a variety of tinted balms that flatter a full range of skin tones so you can skip the extra step of a lipstick if you just want a hint of color with your lip treatment.
Best inexpensive: Chapstick, $3 for a 3-pack. There’s a reason that Chapstick is the word we all use when we think of lip balm! It’s a consistent performer and available pretty much everywhere. Available in a variety of flavors, you can have a little fun with your lip treatment without breaking the bank. Great to stash in multiple places so you’ve always got one in a pinch.
Best for severely dry lips: Aquaphor Lip Repair Ointment, under $4 per tube. For a truly intensive treatment, this one is a clear winner. Application is a little different since it’s not a stick; squeeze a little of the ointment either onto your fingertip or directly onto your lips. This formula is thicker than others, so a little goes a long way. For those of us who like a multi-tasker, this can also be used on hands, elbows, and to tame flyaway hair.
Best SPF: SunBum SPF 30 Sunscreen Lip Balm, under $10 for a 3-pack. Have you ever gotten a sunburn on your lips? Let me tell you, it’s not fun! Whether you’re commuting, hiking, swimming, or skiing, this balm has you covered. Sometimes we forget that we need sunscreen even in winter, and if you’re planning on enjoying some winter sports, you might want to pick up this one.
So now you’ve got your lip balm and you’re ready to get out there and tackle the day. Why not use a chapstick holder accessory from CharCharms? It’s the perfect place to keep your stick or ointment so you never have to look for it. With 17 options for color and pattern, there’s one for everyone. You could even have a couple of different ones in case you want a tinted balm one day and an intensive treatment on another.
