Lipstick is an easy way to reinforce or change your whole look! In fact, it’s a great way to look pulled together without investing a lot of time or money. Applying lipstick isn’t complicated, but a few key steps will ensure your lips are looking and feeling their best.
The first part of your prep routine: exfoliation. The easiest way to do this is with a damp toothbrush. Use gentle pressure and move in circles so you don’t pull the delicate skin. If you’re into products, consider using lip scrub. Once you’ve exfoliated, it’s time to move onto moisturization. Check out our blog here for recommendations on specific lip balms to fit your needs.
Next up, primer for staying-power and definition. A small amount of concealer or a foundation that matches your skin tone is optimal. This step is optional, but super important if you plan to apply a bold or matte lipstick; they’re prone to feathering into fine lines you didn’t know you had.
Lip liner went out of fashion for a while, but it’s enjoying a comeback. There are clear lip liners that are great for everyday or under a sheer or nude lipstick. Another option is to use a lip liner that closely matches the color of the skin on your lips. The third, and most common, option is to choose a liner that closely matches the shade of lipstick you plan to apply.
Once you’ve chosen a lip liner, start with your Cupid’s bow (the little “v” at the middle of your top lip) and draw an “x” shape to clearly define it. Trace your way around your lips, and then you can either fill in your entire lips or trace a second line just inside the one you just finished. If you’re using a matte or bold lipstick, you’ll get the best results if you completely cover your lips with lip liner.
You’ve exfoliated, moisturized, and lined; now it’s time to move on to the main event! Using your lipstick of choice, start applying the lipstick on the middle of your upper lip, just below the Cupid’s bow. Swipe the lipstick across your lip, working outward to the corners, and fill in any spots you’ve missed. Repeat the same process on the bottom lip, starting in the middle and working outward.
The very last step is to blot with a facial tissue. Fold it in half, hold it between your lips, and press down lightly. This step removes extra product and oil from your lips and leaves just the right amount behind.
